Learn The Terms Used By Internet Providers

You may have been online from the first day the internet went mainstream. But even though you may know it like the back of your hand, there could still be lots to learn about the internet providers who give you your connection. You may be surprised to know that most people aren't aware of their internet type or even how it measures up against other connections.

Whether you are looking for new service, need something less expensive or faster or if you are moving, you are likely asking, "What is the difference between internet service providers in my area?" If you don't understand the term broadband, fiber optics or DSL, rest-assured, you are certainly not alone.

Shopping for internet service can be confusing which is why it's best done online. When you start calling internet providers in your area, you get bombarded with flashy, technical terms and a sales pitch. Sure, what they are saying sounds good but is it what you even need?

When you compare one ISP to another online, you're able to take your time, read reviews, compare prices and packages and really make an informed decision without anyone pressuring you.

A great place to begin with your research is to look up internet providers by entering in your zip code. This will show you right away who offers service in your area. If you're on a comprehensive site, you may also be able to learn about technical terms. DSL uses your existing phone line to connect you, but not at the cost of your telephone service. This connection will actually allow you to use the phone and surf the internet simultaneously.

Cable is pretty popular with avid surfers. If you're already enjoy cable TV, chances are that the company you're with will provide internet as well. If not, companies such as Time Warner Cable or Comcast have bundled packages which include the internet and TV. Although cable is a much faster connection than DSL, you may experience a slowdown in your connection during times when a lot of people are online. But this will depend on where you live.

A fiber optic connection is the fastest residential connection available. It also offers reliability, but does cost more than cable or DSL. But you may not be able to get this internet type where you live, so it's best to check first. Att Uverse is one company that offers this connection for internet as well as TV and phone.

Lastly, if you live in a rural area, you now have more options than ever before. It used to be that only city dwellers could enjoy high speed internet but now there's satellite internet providers offering exceptional service to those who can't get cable or fiber optics. This service is generally on the expensive sign but if you sign up online, you can usually find some attractive incentives.
